Team facilitation (or group coaching) is a fantastic way to help teams work together more effectively, and to remove the obstacles that prevent them from doing so. Group coaching can be very useful if you’re trying to:

When should I use a Facilitation & when should I use Coaching?

If you have a group of people that need to be aligned then facilitation is right for you.  For example, if you are just forming a leadership team then getting a facilitator on board to help create the right structure for this team (e.g. how to run a productive leadership meeting, what each team member's responsibilities are etc.) is the best way to get support.

 
 
 
 
 

How does the Facilitation process work?

The process usually starts out with a 1-2-1 fact find with each group member to get a sense of where each person is and to set clear objectives.  Then as a team, we establish the purpose of the group and set measurable goals.


If I am helping to create a best practice meeting, I will initially run the meetings, then facilitate the conversations, then move into an advisory role and finally observatory before handing over the best practice meetings for you to continue running.

 
 
 

What should I look for in a Facilitator?

Firstly, they need to be good at process (e.g. know the best practice way to run a meeting and ensure it delivers outcomes).


Ensure they have the relevant skills and experience.  They need to be adaptable to fit the 'rhythm' of your meeting and be willing to go off-piste if appropriate.


Most importantly, ensure they are a good cultural fit (e.g. a creative agency doesn't want a stuffy shirt and tie wearing corporate facilitator).

 
 
 

About Rob Da Costa

I have 30+ years of commercial business experience. After beginning my career by working in various blue chip companies, I took the leap In 1991 to start my own marketing, PR and design agency. Over the next 11 years, I grew the business into an award-winning agency with 25 staff and revenues in excess of £1.5m. In 2002, I sold the business and then retrained to become a coach and mentor.
